St Oswald’s Ultra – Race Report

05 Oct 2015

On Saturday 26th September, Shrewsbury AC’s very own ultramarathon lover, Michael Betts took part in the 2nd ever staging of the St Oswald Ultra 100 mile race, his debut over the grueling 100 mile distance. The 100 mile route started at the famous Lindisfarne Priory on Holy Island before heading southwards on a hilly, largely off-road trail course along the St Oswald’s Way. The route takes in stunning views of the Northumberland Coastline, before finishing 3 miles beyond the end of the St Oswald’s Way in Chollerford. The race is not for inexperienced runners and as such there were strict cut-off times at 5 different Checkpoints that had to be met.

Michael who had prepared well for the event, had a great race finishing 17th in a time of 24 hours 56 minutes. Despite feeling suitably “broken” at the finish, Michael was pleased with his run as he gained the required final qualifying points for the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc Mountain race. Just to finish the event is a fantastic achievement in what was a proud day for him and his family. Full race results below.
