Shrewsbury Athletic Club runners have competed in the first two fixtures of the Shropshire Hills Summer Fell Race Series, the Caradoc Classic and Wrekin Streak races. Graham Jones was first home for the Club at Caradoc in 21st place and 1st Veteran Over 60 in 28/12, with Steve Turk 32nd and 3rd Veteran Over 45 in 29/24, Gill Evans 89th and 1st Lady Veteran Over 55 in 36/05 and Emily McBride 127th in 50/06. Gill Evans was 1st Lady Veteran Over 55 and sole competitor for the Club at the Wrekin Streak in 96th place in 29/03. After two races, Gill is 1st Lady Veteran Over 55 in the Series. Gill is continuing to demonstrate her domination of this category, having won the Winter 2016/17 Series and three Series prior to that. In the Winter 2016/17 Series, Scott Hall was overall 3rd Male and Zoe Barber overall 3rd Female.


The Club was well represented at the Market Drayton 10K, with Sara Willhoit leading the squad home in 39th place in 38/23 in a field of almost 2200 runners, 3rd in the Womens' race and a personal best time by almost two minutes. Alan Dean was next in 64th place in 39/46 and Chris Wakeman 110th and 3rd Veteran Over 55 in 41/46. Next came Pete Savill 112th and 3rd Veteran Over 60 in 41/52, with Jo Dean 219th in 44/58 and Duncan Rose 239th and 4th Veteran Over 60 in 45/21.


There was a Club one-two at the Sheinton Steeplechase, with Paul Jones 1st in 19/16 and Gabe Morris 2nd in 19/46. There were Category successes for Haydn Jones 1st Veteran Over 55 in 26th place in 24/49, Gill Evans 1st Lady Veteran Over 55 in 61st place in 29/48, Derek Owen 2nd Veteran Over 65 in 62nd place in 31/01 and Gordon Trevor 5th Veteran Over 65 in 81st place in 50/30.


To wrap up a busy period on and off road, Matt Hall finished 2nd in the tough Barlaston Ups and Downs Spring Treble Race in 29/02, narrowly missing out in a sprint finish to the overall Series winner. Dan Smith finished 4th in the Newtown 10K race in 37/59, with Richard Jones 8th and 1st Veteran Over 50 in 40/05, after having finished 9th and 2nd Veteran Over 50 in 63/35 in the North Wales 10 Mile Championships at Wrexham. Matt Guilder was 114th in the Mid Cheshire 5K race in 17/30.
