The road running section of the club comprises runners of all abilities from Charity or fun runners to serious competitors. New members are always welcome! Although not everyone who trains with the club wishes to compete, the club has a core of dedicated runners that regularly compete in a range of road races all year round from local 5k and parkrun events to marathons abroad.
The club tries to support local races and Shrewsbury AC are usually well represented at popular local road races such as the Shrewsbury Half Marathon, Telford 10k, Market Drayton 10k, or Lake Vrynwy Half Marathon as well as the Shrewsbury and Telford parkrun events.
Some lucky members may get to represent the club at national mass participation races such as the London Marathon or Great North Run. Annually, Shrewsbury AC has 2 club places available for the London Marathon. Fully paid up members are eligible to enter the club ballot as long as they were not successful to obtain a place in the previous year’s London Marathon and they must agree to wear the official SAC Club Vest on race day.
The club has a dedicated Road Race Secretary, Chris Wakeman. As part of his role, Chris will administer the “Club Standards”. For more information including a table of Male and Female standards for each distance please click Shrewsbury AC Road Running Standards (updated standards coming soon).
Chris Wakeman also organises the annual club Road Running Championships and produces the senior club rankings at 5K, 10K and Half Marathon.
Locally, as well as there being a number of popular annual road races that club runners compete in, Shrewsbury AC runners compete in the Telford AC Sexarathon Series which is a series of 6 road races between April and September http://www.telfordathleticclub.co.uk/races/sexarathon). Races range in distance from 5k to 5 mile and attract the top road runners from across the West Midlands.
There are other local road race series in which Shrewsbury AC runners have competed in the past. Slightly further a field, there is the North Staffs Road Running Association Series (http://www.nsrra.org.uk/). There are a larger number of races throughout the year ranging from fast and flat shorter races such as the prestigious Alsager 5 in February to hilly half marathons and even a full marathon.
Although road running tends to involve club members competing as individuals, the club is able to enter a team in the Midland 6 (Men) / 4 (Women) Stage Road Relays and Midland 12 (Men) / 6 (Women) Stage Road Relays dependent on availability and interest. These prestigious events are hosted at Sutton Park in Birmingham with the Midland 12 (Men) / 6 (Women) Stage in March/April time and the Midland 6 (Men) / 4 (Women) Stage traditionally held in September prior to the start of the X-Country Season. These races also have separate races for Masters teams.
“parkruns” are free, weekly, timed 5k runs and there is one that takes part in the Quarry Park in Shrewsbury. For more general information about parkrun please visit the parkrun website (http://www.parkrun.org.uk). Shrewsbury AC runners tend to run in the Shrewsbury and Telford parkrun for fun or use the events as training for other races.
