Monika Oparka became the first of Shrewsbury Athletic Club's women runners to compete in an Ultra Marathon when she successfully completed the Madeira Island Ultra Trail Marathon on Sunday. Commencing at midnight, she completed the arduous course, which covered the full length of the mountainous island from coast to coast and taking in the island's highest peaks, 73 miles in length and with 23,000 feet of ascent in a time of 29 hours,39 minutes and 37 seconds, despite 260 of the 900 field either pulling out or being disqualified. The event is part of the Ultra Trail World Tour Series of long distance trail races of over 100Km at venues around the world.

 

There were some impressive performances at the London Marathon, Richard Mckenna finishing in 2/42/52, Kevin Francis in a personal best time of 2/55/53 and Carl Aveyard in 2/58/28. Colin Perry clocked 3/19/34, running as a guide with friend Alan Lock, raising money for the charity Blind Veterans UK. Pete Butler completed the Dusseldorf Marathon in 3/53/33.

 

Elsewhere on the road running scene, there were individual successes for each of the four Club runners who competed in the Mid Cheshire 5K, with three personal best times for Matt Hall 33rd in 15/19, Charlie Rogers 71st in 16/03 and Connor Middleton 134th in 16/51. Pete Savill was 1st Veteran Over 65 in 317th place in 19/47.

 

The Shropshire Summer Hill Race Series commenced with the staging of the Caradoc Classic Fell Race, with Stuart Proctor 31st in 29/41 and Gill Evans 95th in 38/09 and 2nd Lady Veteran Over 55, following her successful Winter Series where she won the Lady Veteran Over 55 crown.
