Shrewsbury Athletic Club's international ultra marathon runner, Michael Betts, has been on his travels again, competing in the Madeira Island Ultra Trail Race, a race of 118Km and 7700m of ascent, crossing the length of the island and taking in the island's highest peaks and mountains, which he completed in a time of 20 hours 34 minutes and 51 seconds, finishing 76th in a field of 900 runners and was 3rd British runner to finish. The race forms part of the Ultra Trail World Tour Series of twenty two long distance trail races each of more than 100Km across the five continents of the world and he is aiming to take part in two more in the Series this year, the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run in America in June and the Ultra Trail Mont Blanc Race in September, with the object of eventually taking part in all twenty two races in the Series.
