Rich Autumn colours provided the setting when Shrewsbury Athletic Club staged their ninth Mad Jack's 5 Mile Race, held in conjunction with and with kind permission of the National Trust, at Attingham Park on Saturday. A bumper entry of 355 runners enjoyed the calm weather condtions and the picturesque course, made more challenging as a result of the Trust's current building projects, with piles of hardcore from the path resurfacing work and soil from the excavations for the Biomass building providing two additional obstacles for the runners, as well as the popular section through the Trust's pond.
The Mens' race was won by David Webb of Telford Athletic Club, who led from start to finish, in a new course record time of 27/02, with Paul Jones of Mercia Fell Runners second in 28/04 and Shrewsbury Athletic Club's Matt Hall third in 28/56. First and second places in the Womens' race went to Shrewsbury Athletic Club runners, with new recruit Zoe Barber winning in 34/07 and Anna Bartlett second in 35/06, with Amanda Davies of Cheadle Running Club third in 35/22. There were further successes for the host club in the newly staged team event, with Matt Hall, James Hickinbottom, Simon Adney and Robert Lisney, first Mens' team and Zoe Barber, Anna Bartlett, Rebecca Moseley and Gill Evans, first Womens' team. Race numbers were boosted by the welcome participation by a strong contingent from the Dolly Mixtures club.
National Trust General Manager at Attingham Park, Mark Agnew, praised the turnout of runners and thanked Shrewsbury Athletic Club for the help with funding of the Estate provided by the staging of the event. He also stated that some special plans would be made for next rear's race, which will be the 10th Anniversary of the staging of the popular event. Race organiser Kevin Francis praised the runners and the support of the race sponsors Rybrook BMW, Cotswold Outdoor and Up and Running. Vincent Mudry of sporting goods company Salomon presented the Mens' and Womens' race winners with a pair of Salomon running shoes. The prize of the weekend car, kindly sponsored by Rybrook BMW, was won by Rachel King of the Dolly Mixtures club.
