After a couple of years competing at the British Transplant Games Andy Lewis travelled to Helsinki in July to take part in the European Transplant Games. "It turned out to be quite a good week", says Andy. "I competed in 4 events - 400m, 800m, 1500m and 5k road race and managed to come away with a gold medal in all four. After the stem cell transplant five and a half years ago it's been really hard to get back running again. The British Games was the incentive to start training - being able to compete against athletes who are also transplant recipients helped level the playing field. The aim now is to be able to compete at a reasonable standard against club runners." A couple of weeks after Helsinki Andy was in Liverpool at the British Games where he won the 400m, and retained his titles from 2015 in the 800m and 1500m. He also gained medals in the cycling events - silver in the road race and bronze in the time trial. When asked what's next Andy said "On the back of the performance in Helsinki I've been invited to be part of the Transplant Sport Great Britain Team at the World Championships in 2017. They take place in Malaga at the end of June - so I'll need to do plenty of hot weather training if I'm to do well".
Andy also wanted to make sure that his brother , Mark, who was his stem cell donor. "Without Mark I'd not be able to do any of this. It really shows that bone marrow, stem cell and organ donation truly is the Gift Of Life".
